I Need help with a collection agency fictitious debt?
here's the situation. My senior citizen friend has been living in the salvation army for about 4 months now. He will have to move by the end of August because of time restraints on living at this transitional facility. He get's a social security check of $920 that has to supply his rent and food. We went to check out a senior citizen's retirement home that is HUD and the rent is based on income. It is so nice. This is the ideal place to live for him. The Problem is that at the last apartment he lived with 2 other guys that left him with a $980 bill that he had nothing to do with. Something about the apartment manager not taking him off the lease. So, the retirement facility requires that he have this rental debt be removed from his credit report before they can allow him to live there. This is the place for him and I want to know if there is anything I can do to expedite the process, because of time constraints ,I've contacted the collection agency and they havent' returned my call.

- I hate to say it, but if his name was still on the lease than legally he is still responsible for the charges. Is there any way that he could get numbers of the other two guys and talk to them about at least each of them paying a third of that bill? I really hope that you find a solution for him.
- The collection agency probably will not talk to anyone but him. (Privacy policy). Your other answerer is correct he is legally liable if his name was on lease. Call the apartment complex see if they will settle for less than full balance. Salvation Army may help (possibly?). Good luck! Nice that he has a friend like you.
- Unfortunately they will NOT remove that off of his credit. The only thing that can be done is to pay it and get it off. Even if he has to borrow the money and then pay someone back a bit at a time. I hope and pray that he has someone that can help him do this. Good Luck!
