My car was scheduled to be repossessed. The repo man called me, IDed himself as State Police, and told me to ?
surrender my car or I would be arrested the next day. I was able to make my payment soon after that and keep my car but I'm still disturbed that the repo agent basically impersonated the police. Is that a legal debt collection technique? It's in Illinois I have his phone number, it's on my caller ID. Also he told me to call him back to inform him of where I would put the car so he could pick it up, so I called him back as well.

- NO, It is highly illegal to impersonate a police officer. What state are you in? Here is a link to use, if I knew the state I could get more technical. http://www.legalmatch.com/law-library/article/impersonating-a-police-officer.html Just to add find out the repo company they use in your area and if you can narrow it down to who called they can be arrested . You may not need to read it all but at the bottom tells you what they can/will do for impersonating an officer. http://www.illinois.gov/pressreleases/ShowPressRelease.cfm?SubjectID=1&RecNum=6121
- Nobody is allowed to impersonate the police. Its not a legal debt collection technique, its a crime. File some complaints- with state or local police, and whatever govt agency is in charge of the repo guys company. .
- That is illegal. You could have him arrested for impersonating a police officer. Also read up on the internet about repo laws in your state. Most states have a "Right of peaceable Repo" law.And they cannot arrest you, that guy was just trying to bully you.
